A new digital court system is on its way to North Carolina's largest county. Not everyone is happy about it. Mecklenburg County is rolling out a controversial new online court system.
In theory, the public and attorneys can file and access court documents without having to go to the courthouse. Channel 9 reports top officials from across the Tar Heel State are worried that this new system may cause a lot of headaches.
The state has tried this system before. They reportedly tried a launch in Wake, Lee, Johnston, and Harnett counties. The Wake County District Attorney isn't so sure about this. He reportedly is asking for an independent review after a "disastrous" launch.
There is even a lawsuit against The Odyssey system. The suit claims the systems has several defects. Those defects have reportedly led to wrongful arrests and constitution violations. Defense Attorney George Laughrun tells the television station, “Now Odyssey is going to go back to where we started pre-COVID. In my opinion, we’re gonna have delays, delays, delays, because the court system in Mecklenburg is just not equipped to handle the volume of cases.”
