The 14 Scariest Things In North Carolina
We are very close to Halloween. Most states have their share of ghostly stories. North Carolina is no exception. According to Only in Our State, these are the 14 scariest things in North Carolina.
Devil’s Tramping Ground
One of the most famous is the Devil’s Tramping Ground. This is a spot where nothing will grow. If you leave something in the circle, it will not stay there long. Seems the devil wants his space.
Brown Mountain Lights
The Brown Mountain Lights have been a story for a long time. Only In Our State says, For over 100 years, no one has been able to figure out what the Brown Mountain Lights are. Appearing after sunset, the lights change in size, color, and shape. Legends link the lights to ‘ghost maidens’ searching for their loved ones after a great battle between The Cherokee and Catawba.
The Great Dismal Swamp
Taking up 112,000 acres along NC’s northern border, The Great Dismal Swamp actually had a novel written about it. Years ago Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel wrote about this anomaly. People say they hear strange sounds, see lights, and see ghosts. Are these the spirits of long-since departed slaves?
Lydia’s Bridge
This one really creeps me out. It’s called Lydia’s Bridge. Mary Lydia Jones was traveling with her prom date years ago. He hit a sharp curve and wrecked the car. He died instantly.
Mary Lydia did not. She struggled and got out of the car. Then with a bloody prom dress in the pouring rain, she looked for help. Nobody would stop for her. She died on that road.
A bridge was put up to prevent another wreck on the curve. And so became Lydia’s Bridge in Jamestown. Rumor is you can still see her along the side of the road on rainy evenings. Some even say they have seen a ghost sitting in the back of the vehicle. Mary Lydia is just trying to make it to prom.

These 9 North Carolina Cities Offer Ghost Tours Featuring Their Haunted History
When you think of haunted cities where do you think of first? From what I’ve heard there is a bit of a rivalry between Savannah and New Orleans as to what is truly the most haunted city in America. But if you believe in such things, you can find a little bit of spooky, haunted history, in almost every city in the US. And that means here in North Carolina there are some haunted stories as well. In fact, while you may have never known there are numerous cities in North Carolina that offer ghost tours and other spooky adventures.
North Carolina Ghost Tours
And with Halloween fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to start planning. Places like Scarowinds and haunted trails can be fun for sure. But to me, there is something more ominous about listening to true stories while wandering dark streets blissfully unaware of what could be around you, than walking through a crowded man-made haunted attraction. Knowing someone is trying to scare me, I’m expecting it. Plus there are countless other people in the same place, and often times they are more gorey than eerie. I’m more scared walking through the parking deck at work (for real though) at night than I am at a haunted house. So it’s no surprise ghost tours are my preferred scary attraction.
Believe it or not, I’m not 100% sold on the existence of paranormal activity. I’ve heard stories and seen video (thanks to my dad watching Ghost Hunters back in the day), that certainly makes me wonder. But despite having gone on a number of ghost tours in cities like Savannah, Charleston, Williamsburg, and Boston among others I’ve never witnessed anything to make me a true believer. But the stories, the history, and that element of the unknown keep me fascinated and always looking for my next ghost tour. So no matter what North Carolina city you find yourself in this fall season, check out one of these haunted history tours. Below are 9 different cities in the state that offer ghost tours, some have only one option, and others have numerous. Have you done any of these? I’d love to hear about it and your recommendations! Happy haunts!
