According to CBS News, there are Orionid meteor showers happening throughout the month of October. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll even be able to see these beautiful meteor showers for yourself in the Carolinas.
The Orionid meteors are known for being extremely fast and bright at the same time. This makes them the perfect meteors to watch light up the sky. Orionid Meteor showers are currently happening, here’s how to see them in the Carolinas.
NASA stated that the Orionid meteor shower started on September 26th and will continue until November 22nd. The meteor shower hit its peak on Oct 21st, but is still happening and visible. When the sky is moonless, people should be able to see around 20 meteors per hour.
The Orionid meteor shower is visible in the northern and southern hemispheres. If you’re planning to try and watch the meteor shower it’s best to go out after midnight. In order to see the meteors more clearly getting away from light sources is key. After about 30 minutes of being in the dark, your eyes should be used to the dark. This means you’ll be able to see the meteors in all their glory.
The meteor shower itself should last until dawn each night.
There is another meteor shower in 2023 if you miss this one. This meteor shower, called the Leonids, will start on November 3rd and end on December 2nd. That means that the Leonid and Orionid meteor showers will overlap with each other in November. The peak of the Leonid meteor shower will be on November 18th.
