According to CBS News, many states across the U.S. are suing Meta. They claim that Instagram and Facebook both purposefully create an environment that is addictive to children and teens.

The attorneys generals from the states involved filed the federal lawsuits on Tuesday. In these lawsuits, they claimed that Meta is intentionally getting kids addicted to social media.

The lawsuits state that Meta purposefully gets children and teens hooked to boost company profits. They also claim that Meta consistently collects data from children who are under 13 years old without parental consent. That is against federal law.

Constant alerts and the option to scroll infinitely on these apps are causing kids to become addicted to the apps. The states claim that this is leading to a mental health crisis that is being seen in many young people currently.

"Children are particularly susceptible to addictive technologies, and Meta has exploited these vulnerabilities, putting its quest for advertising revenue over the psychological and emotional well-being of young people," the attorney general for Washington, D.C., Brian L. Schwalb, stated.

Meta says that they are disappointed that this is the route attorney generals chose. The company claims that they provide "safe, positive experiences online, and have already introduced over 30 tools to support teens and their families."

This debate became a large issue when former Meta employee Frances Haugen shared documents from Meta's internal company research back in 2021. Haugen claims that there is data pointing towards Instagram worsening suicidal thoughts and eating disorders for teen girls.
