Here’s When Thanksgiving Will Be Celebrated In North Carolina This Year
So, when will Thanksgiving be celebrated this year in North Carolina? There are some holidays that take no thinking because their dates are affixed. For example, Halloween is ALWAYS on October 31. Christmas is ALWAYS celebrated on December 25. Shoot Groundhog Day is a permanent thing every February 2. However, my favorite holiday is one that changes every year. Thanksgiving, when you’re married to a gourmet cook, becomes a day you look forward to, but it’s never the same day. Why is this? Well, a little Thanksgiving history lesson might be in order.
In September of 1789 the Federal Congress passed a resolution asking President Washington to establish a national “Day of Public Thanksgiving.” A few days later, he did just that. The First Thanksgiving was declared to be Thursday, September 26, 1789.
Over the years multiple presidents did the same with days and dates changing. It wasn’t until President Abraham Lincoln proclamation of 1863 that the Thanksgiving holiday became a permanent annual fixture on the last Thursday of November.
This was all well and good until 1939. That year, Thanksgiving fell on November 30 (the last day of the month). The nation was still dealing with The Great Depression. According to The Center For Legislative Archives, Concerned that the shortened Christmas shopping season might dampen the economic recovery, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a Presidential Proclamation moving Thanksgiving to the second to last Thursday of November. As a result of the proclamation, 32 states issued similar proclamations while 16 states refused to accept the change and proclaimed Thanksgiving to be the last Thursday in November. For two years two days were celebrated as Thanksgiving – the President and part of the nation celebrated it on the second to last Thursday in November, while the rest of the country celebrated it the following week.
What a mess, right? To end the confusion, Congress established a permanent spot for Thanksgiving on the calendar as the last Thursday of November. This was done on October 6, 1941.
So, when will Thanksgiving be celebrated this year in North Carolina? After a couple of years of it coming late in the month, Thanksgiving comes early this year. My favorite holiday falls on Thursday November 23,2023.
