Myrtle Beach South Carolina Popular Donut Shop Is Gone For Good

Author Debbie Nance
November 21st 9:08 AM

Did someone say donuts?  Unfortunately, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina residents are saying goodbye to a popular donut shop in the area.  The Donut Man closing announcement came recently.   And, fans of the longtime staple hate to see it go.

According to Facebook posts, The Donut Man posted a notice on their door telling fans of the closure.  And, anyone who lives near the 200 S. Kings Hwy. favorite shop knows this place has been around over a decade.  But, The Donut Man closing is permanent.

The typed notice on their door reads:  “Dear Donut Lovers,  It is with heavy heart that we announce the permanent closure of our donut shop.  We have loved serving you our delicious donuts and coffee, but it is time for us to move on to new adventures.  We want to thank you for your loyalty and support over the years.  We will miss you all very much!  Sincerely, The Donut Man Team.  Our donut shop is now permanently closed, but the donut love never ends!

It seems that small businesses in the Myrtle Beach area struggle to hang on sometimes.   We started visiting Myrtle regularly many years ago.  And, we watch so many come and go.  However, it always hits a bit harder when it’s a longtime business closing its doors.

For more on The Donut Man closing and small business struggles see the full story on Myrtle Beach SC news.

North Carolina Donut Shop Named The 2nd Best In The Country

Friday, June 2 is National Donut Day, and ahead of the celebration, Yelp released its second annual Top 100 US Donut Shops list. And apparently, NC has some delicious donuts. One North Carolina Donut shop was named the second-best in the entire country. The highly praised donuts come to us from Asheville. And 2nd best, that’s some high praise. They weren’t alone as 5 total North Carolina places made Yelp’s list. This includes donuts from Asheville, Fayetteville, and Concord among others.

Did you know there are donut trends? There sure are! According to Yelp the biggest donut trends in 2023 are:

  • Outrageous Toppings
  • Classic, Old Fashioned Donuts
  • Offering Other Bakery Treats

While my current favorite donut spot, The Salty, didn’t make the cut, I’ll be sure to check out a couple of these locations. I enjoy a good gourmet donut but I also can’t turn down a hot now Krispy Kreme glazed donut. There just might not be anything better! The best donut I’ve had lately- a butterbeer one from the previously mentioned The Salty. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for my waistline) it was a limited-time offering. So how did Yelp come up with these ratings that ranked a North Carolina Donut Shop 2nd best in the country? According to Yelp, they “identified businesses in the donuts category, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews between January 1st, 2022 and March 31st, 2023.”

Keep reading to see the top 10 donut shops in the US and the other North Carolina locations that were recognized.

  • 10. Purvé Donut Stop, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

  • 9. Simone’s Donuts, Long Beach, California

  • 8. Stan’s Donut Shop, Santa Clara, California

  • 7. The Jelly Donut, San Francisco, California

  • 6. Round Rock Donuts, Round Rock, Texas

  • 5. Hot N Sweet Coffee and Donut Shop, Page, Arizona

  • 4. Munchkins Donuts, Covina, California

  • 3. JD Flannel Donuts and Coffee, San Juan Capistrano, California

  • 2. HOLE – Hot Doughnuts and Fresh Coffee, Asheville, North Carolina

Have you tried HOLE? I haven’t but I typically visit Asheville at least once a year so I will definitely be adding this to my list for my next visit!

  • 1. Rocklin Donuts & Cinnamon, Rocklin, California

  • Where The Other North Carolina Donut Shops Ranked

  • 13. Superior Bakery, Fayetteville, North Carolina

This is the second time Superior Bakery in Fayetteville has made the top 100 list, though that took a substantial jump this year.

  • 57. Baker's Dozen, Raleigh, North Carolina

Apparently, I’m not up on my donuts, while Raleigh is my second home, I’ve never tried Baker’s Dozen either.

  • 62. OMG Donuts & Bakery, Concord, North Carolina

  • 97. HenDough, Hendersonville, North Carolina
