It has been raining for days in the Charlotte area. Normally that means flooding on the roads or maybe even power outages. Here's why authorities have issued an unusual warning for Lake Norman.

According to the Cornelius Police Department, the lake has been on the rise. And they say "odd" things are being picked up and carried away as published in the Charlotte Observer. Police said in a new release, published by the Charlotte Observer, "The rise in lake levels has led to an increase in floating debris posing a significant hazard to navigation".

The press release goes on to say, "Boaters are strongly advised to exercise caution and be vigilant for floating debris above the water line". Police add that some of the things you might encounter are partial pieces of docks that were once on dry land. Or you might encounter large tress or other natural floating objects.

The U.S. Geological Survey says that collected rain in the Lake Norman area was recorded at more than 3.5 inches. As those of us know that live around here, Lame Norman is massive. And it covers more than 32,000 acres of surface. The lake sprawls across four counties and 520 miles of shoreline. Here's why authorities issued an unusual warning for Lake Norman. Boaters should watch out for large floating objects in the lake. Sometimes they might not be visible until you get right on them. Summertime is here! And while the 4th of July may be behind us there are still many weekends left to get out on the lake and enjoy some fun in the sun. But what if you don't have a boat or a friend with a boat? Never fear you can rent one! There are several places to rent a boat on North Carolina's Lake Norman.

Lake Wylie is just a short drive north of the Charlotte area and borders places such as Mooresville, Cornelius, and Huntersville. It's by the far the most popular lake in the area with lots of cool spots to dock your boat.

Keep in mind many rental places require at least one person to have a North Carolina boating license. To receive one you have to take an approved boating education course. So if you are planning on renting make sure you inquire about the rental company's policy.
