North Carolina Lottery Winner To Make Unique Purchase With Windfall

There are two aspects to the story of a recent North Carolina Education Lottery winner that immediately caught my attention.  The first?  How the discovery of the windfall occurred.  Sometimes, I’ll pick up a scratch off ticket and bring it home.  I know it’s going to sound kind of corny and juvenile, but my wife has always loved the actual scratching off process.  Watching her do it is really not all that dissimilar to watching her open a Christmas present (even if almost always this is like discovering the box is empty <g>).

Anyway, Michael Morgan of Benson sat down for dinner with his wife.  Before they dug in, he gave her a ticket.  Specifically, the North Carolina Education Lottery’s new “10X Lucke Rewards” ticket.  Seconds later, she had him double check what she uncovered.  It was a $1 million winner.  Michael Morgan no longer cared all that much about dinner.  Seriously, he tells WRAL, “I lost my appetite right then.  I couldn’t eat.”  No kidding?  I think my first move would have been to suggest we skip whatever we were eating and head for a restaurant we can’t afford to celebrate.

The second thing about Michael Morgan’s North Carolina Education Lottery win that caught my eye was what he plans to do with it.  I would pay off any and every person I know, purchase a place at the beach, and then put everything else in savings.  Michael Morgan plans on buying an 18-wheeler.

Okay, so this is not as out of the clouds as it first seems.  Michael IS a truck driver.  However, I’m a radio broadcaster.  Not a chance I would invest my windfall in my business.  That being said, a quick Bing search pulled back the curtain as to why Morgan would want to do this.  First, I guess you have to realize that winning $1 million is actually taking home a little less than $500,000.  This is certainly life-changing, but not retirement, money.  So, it’s not like Michael Morgan could quit driving a truck.
