Massive Snowfalls Mean North Carolina Mountain Skiing Is Never Better
There are three distinct types of recreation/vacation people in the Carolinas: beach people, lake people and mountain people. And they are not as dissimilar as you may think. For beach and lake folk, once the sun is warm and the water too, you literally can’t keep them away from their respective oasis. Mountain people? Same thing. Once the weather turns cold, the forecast watching begins. Snow is the magic elixir for these. And that’s the rub. There’s ALWAYS going to be warm sunshine in abundance. Sometimes though, Mother Nature is not as cooperative with the frozen white stuff. Not this year. Snow falls totals are massive. Skiing in the North Carolina mountains has never been better.
Resorts like Cataloochie Ski Area (see below) cannot contain their excitement and approval of the weather situation in the North Carolina mountains. Rarely do you have all slopes open at any time. Currently all 18 of Cataloochie’s runs are open. And this is not about to end any time soon.
Las week alone, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort received twelve inches of fresh powder. This is more than enough to drive skiers and snowboarders to ecstasy. And wait for it, the North Carolina mountains are expecting another three inches of snow by tonight. The highest elevations are expecting as much as eight additional inches of snow.
According to CBS17, nearly all of North Carolina’s major ski resorts are reporting over 80 inches of manmade and natural snowfall draped across their slopes.
Numbers and forecasts like this are staggering, and music to the ears of snow enthusiasts. So, if you are wondering where half your office is this week, it’s a good bet that their GPS is dialed into the mountains of western North Carolina. The skiing there has never been better.
And cheer up, beach and lake people, your day is coming. That groundhog pops his head out next week with the forecast for spring.
