Here’s What Makes South Carolina One Of The Most Sinful States In The Nation
I truly think there’s a list for anything you imagine these days. And, every day we comb websites for the ‘best’ this and ‘worst’ that. But, this one is one that surprised me. Apparently, WalletHub did a bit of research to come up with the ‘Most Sinful States’ for 2024. And, the Palmetto State ended up in the top 10. So, here’s what makes South Carolina one of the most sinful states in the nation.
First of all, where do we rank on the list? Well, South Carolina scores pretty high among the most sinful states. And, when you look at the numbers, South Carolina is at number 6 overall. Of course, the study examined all 50 states across 55 key indicators of all sorts of behavior contributing to the states’ sinful nature. WalletHub looked at everything from anger and hatred to jealousy, greed, lust, vanity, laziness and more. Yep, it covers pretty much all the deadly sins.
But, which categories helped push South Carolina toward the top of the most sinful states? First, our ‘vice index’ is a 49.39. And, to put that in perspective, the number one spot, Nevada, scored 60.47. However, in the ‘anger and hatred’ category South Carolina ranked number 2. I guess the Palmetto State is a bit feisty. The state ranked 3rd when it comes to ‘greed.’ Our best category was ‘vanity,’ where we ranked 31. So, I guess that’s a positive.
And, as for North Carolina, the Tar Heel State did a bit better overall coming in at 14th among most sinful states. North Carolina’s worst category was ‘greed,’ where the state ranked 9th. Also, North Carolina’s overall ‘vice index’ scored 45.20 for the state. However, I wonder what that says for those of us who live in one state and work in another. Who knows?
So, take a look at the full study to see more data and which states scored worst in the 7 deadlies to rank among the most sinful states.
North Carolina Ranks As One Of The Most Sinful States, But Not As High As Our Neighbors
The climate of the US is incredibly devised, especially between states that have different cultures, views, and ways of life. And we are quick to point at those different than us, as the source of all that is wrong with the U.S. But none of us are perfect, and we all have plenty of things we can work on. Another way to look at it, we are all committing sins. So in that honor, our friends at WalletHub conducted a study to name the most sinful states in 2023. And, not great news, North Carolina ranked in the top 15 of this sinful states list.
What exactly is a sin? The Oxford Dictionary defines since as “an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.” And these sins can be costly. On one hand, gambling costs the U.S. about $5 billion per year, according to WalletHub. Though it brings in much more than that in tourism money. WalletHub also says that another sin, smoking, costs us over $300 billion per year. The Bible talks about the 7 deadly sins which according to Britanica are:
1. vainglory, or pride,
2. greed, or covetousness
3. lust, or inordinate or illicit sexual desire
4. envy
5. gluttony, which is usually understood to include drunkenness,
6. wrath, or anger
7. sloth
But back to the states. Some states are more well-behaved than others. So in order to determine the states that most give in to their desires, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 47 key indicators of immoral or illicit behavior. The data set ranges from violent crimes per capita to excessive drinking to the share of the population with gambling disorders.
