Full disclosure, I’ve sort of become a craft beer snob. It used to be that when I would walk into a bar in a beer mood, my first impulse would be to order a light beer that I could readily buy in a grocery store. Chalk it up to effective advertising, I guess. Then, the craft brewery craze began. And I (along with my friends/partners in crime) dove feet first into sampling any and all creative brews. Now, I seriously am incapable of ordering beer that, for lack of a better terms is “off the rack.” That being said, even on my most adventurous beer tasting days, I don’t think I could make friends with “Renew Brew.” It’s the first beer in the Carolinas made from recycled wastewater.
Look, I get it. 100%. I KNOW that the wastewater has been recycled. Here’s the process in black and white from ABC 11. Charlotte Water processes 85 million gallons of water a day. Instead of returning it to the Catawba River, the water goes through extra purification and is tested for 150 contaminants. Translation? The “wastewater” used to make Renew Brew is likely much cleaner than the water in its initial state. That being said, I’m not ready to embrace Renew Brew. I just can’t get past the word wastewater. Yet. There’s a couple of arguments I’m being compelled by.
First off, Renew Beer is made through a partnership with Charlotte Water and Town Brewing. Town Brewing plays no games. Their selection of craft beers is as good and extensive as anyone in town. Second, and most importantly, Renew Brew won best in show at the Queen City Brewers Festival blind taste testing. This is the kind of thing I’ll need to do. Someone will have to slip me some Renew Brew when I don’t know what I’m tasting, and then I’ll laugh and go, “Okay, I’ll have another.”
That moment will have to wait, though. Renew Brew, the Carolina’s first beer made from recycled wastewater is not yet for sale, BUT you can try it out at Town Brewing’s 420 Festival coming up in April.
Is NC's Favorite Beer Your Go-To? Here's The 10 Most Popular Beers In North Carolina
It’s National Beer Day on April 7th! While beer is not my go-to drink I enjoy a cold one at a football game or outdoor summer concert. It helps sets the mood for sure. But for many many people beer is far and away their favorite adult beverage. Craft beer is taking up a larger and larger slice of the market each year. Just look at the sheer number of breweries in Charlotte. And it’s more and more common for bars and restaurants to have more craft beer than domestic options. But it’s still the heavy hitters that have the largest market share. With seemingly unlimited options for beer lovers, what are the most popular? And what are the most popular beers in North Carolina specifically?
Well, our friends at BetCarolina analyzed Google searches for the top 50-selling beers in the United States for the last month. They also pulled results for North Carolina. And I would have guessed Bud Light would have come in at number one. But it didn’t quite make it. Also noticeable absent was my favorite beer Corona. Though it’s a different import that tops the list. That’s right, it’s not even a domestic beer that is the most in-demand in NC.
So grab a cold one, kick back and relax, and scroll through this list of the 10 most popular beers in North Carolina. Cheers!
