Doing This Nasty Thing Can Ease Pain
So dealing with pain is an issue with many Americans. They spend millions looking for relief. Apparently doing this nasty thing can ease pain.
IFLScience says a recent study conducted on college students in Michigan found that using curse words and making obscene gestures can increase a person’s pain tolerance.
The study included 111 students at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, 61 percent of whom identified as women, with an average age of 19. Pain was inflicted using a well-known experimental method called the cold pressor task, in which a person’s hand is immersed in ice water for as long as they can stand it.
The participants were asked to swear and use taboo gestures while undergoing pain-inducing tasks. The researchers discovered that engaging in taboo acts enabled the students to endure pain significantly longer compared to engaging in neutral behaviors. This suggests that swearing and giving the middle finger may have an analgesic effect.
One thing many people say is painful is getting a tattoo. That may have changed according to this article. But if it hurts consider the swearing technique. You might want to warn the tattoo artist.
