Ross Kinnaird/Getty ImagesThe difference between golf and other major professional sports comes down to one word: participation. Let me explain. If you're watching a professional football game, you can't get up, go outside, put on a helmet, and play at Bank of America Stadium. However, I can grab my clubs, get off the couch and play Pinehurst No. 2, the site of the US Open Championship next month. Further, there's a way that I can even compete against the professionals in that golf tournament. Charlotte's David Sanchez is chasing that dream.
Who Is David Sanchez?
Now in all fairness, David Sanchez is not exactly the golf civilian that you and I are. For starters, David Sanchez is a teaching professional. Most days you'll find him helping golf hacks like you and me at Velocity Golf in Pineville. David is also an accomplished golfer. As a kid he won state championships at both Providence High and Providence Day. He went on to be an All-American golfer for the North Carolina State Wolfpack. David Sanchez even turned professional and won tournaments on the PGA Tour. However, changes in his swing led to injuries and a change in his life's path to helping others with their golf troubles.
How Is David Sanchez Qualifying For The US Open?
The United States Open Golf Championship is just that, an open championship. If you're skill level is at a certain measured level or better, all you have to do is pay your entry fee to a local qualifying tournament and your fate is up to you. David Sanchez didn't just enter a local qualifying tournament on Pinehurst's No. 6 course in North Carolina's Sandhills, he was medalist (winner) with a score of 6 under par, 66.
His high finish now enables Sanchez to compete on Monday at Duke University Golf Club in Durham is the Sectional Qualifying Tournament. If he finishes high enough on the leaderboard, he'll qualify to compete in The US Open Golf Championship on Pinehurst No. 2. Speaking of that course to WCNC, Sanchez says, "I've played that golf course so many times. I just know where the spots to be are." The US Open is June 13-16.
