Where Did The Famous Goats Of Goat Island South Carolina Go?
Our family visit Myrtle Beach multiple times throughout the year. But, we had never heard of the famous Goat Island South Carolina near Myrtle Beach.
More About Goat Island South Carolina
The Myrtle Beach area welcomes a massive amount of tourists every season as one of South Carolina’s most popular vacation destinations. And, when folks found themselves exploring some of the great spots to wine and dine in Murrells Inlet, they were often captivated by Goat Island.
For decades, from April to November the goats were brought to the island to help control the “vegetation,” which some say may have actually been unwelcome marijuana plants put there by some men in the town.
Restaurant and goat owner Al Hitchcock was once asked if the goats were affected by ingesting the plants. He indicated he wasn’t sure replying, “I don’t know what a high goat looks like.”
Other tales of goat mischief include one getting loose and eating plants from a neighboring resident’s garden. Hitchcock reportedly ended up buying the woman a bunch of collards to replace what his goats devoured.
According to Southern Living, the goats were joined by peacocks, ducks and pelicans, too. Plus, the 20,000 square foot sanctuary also may have been a hideout for pirates at one time!
As visitors flocked to Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, they ventured to Drunken Jack’s to get the best view of Goat Island South Carolina. The spot even offered a ‘Salty Goat’ cocktail to play off the attraction.
The goats were pets of the restaurant’s owner. And, he was responsible for moving them on and off the island each year since 1982.
What Happened To Goat Island South Carolina?
As happens in the region, weather can turn threatening with tropical storms and hurricanes. And, that’s what happened in September of 2022 when Hurricane Ian took its toll. Waters were waist high. And, Drunken Jack’s owner Al Hitchcock said years of erosion left the island unsafe for the animals.
He safely relocated the goats before things got bad. And, all is well.
They now call their winter home of Osprey Marina in the Socastee area their permanent home. All that remains on Goat Island South Carolina are metal replicas of goats, a reminder of what once was.
According to a story in The Sun News, Hitchcock reassures the fans the goats are happy and thriving with a photo of the goats and a sign on his restaurant that reads, “We miss y’all too.”
My Unique Experience With Goats
I had the opportunity last year to take part in a session of goat yoga. It was less about exercise and more about therapy from these cuties! Goats are adorable.
So, I’m sorry I missed visiting Goat Island South Carolina before it was too late. But, who knows, maybe they’ll return again one day to this or another spot.
