40 Year Charlotte Soul Food Staple To Close
It’s never a happy thing when you see a business close. What you’re actually seeing is someone’s dream come crashing down. To me, it’s all the sadder when that business that’s closing is a family-owned business. Floyds Restaurant has been a staple of the Charlotte restaurant scene for 40 years. At the end of this month, it is shutting its doors forever.
How Did Floyds Restaurant Begin?
In 1986, Otis Floyd opened his restaurant at 4122 N. Graham Street in Charlotte. Otis suddenly passed away in 2014 (just two weeks from his retirement!), and his son, Tyrone took over Floyds Restaurant. According to Q City Metro, the restaurant offers soul food classics like smothered pork chops, fried catfish and chicken, baked macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler and banana pudding. It has been a favorite among Charlotteans for many years. Now, in a message on its mobile ordering website, Floyds has let its customers know that the restaurant will be permanently closed effective June 29.
So Why Is Floyds Restaurant Closing?
In a way, this closing may be sad for us, but joyous for Tyrone Floyd and his family. Let me explain. So many times in the last couple of years when I hear of a restaurant closing the cause is directly related to issues caused by closing/limited access during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is not the case with Floyds Restaurant. No, Tyrone Floyd has experienced two heart attacks since taking over the business and just feels like now is the time to turn off the fryers and spend quality time with his family. Tyrone tells WSOC, “We’ve given a lot. Our family has sacrificed a lot of time. With my kids grown and hopefully having kids pretty soon, I want to be a granddad. I want to be around. I don’t want to die suddenly like my dad did two weeks before retirement.”
