The Famous North Carolina Stingray Has Died
I don’t know why, but this makes me sad. Charlotte, the famous North Carolina stingray has died. Of course hearing any creature has passed away tugs at my heart. Admittedly sea creatures in general don’t particularly effect me in that gut punch kind of way. But we and the rest of the world have grown to know Charlotte. And to root for her.
Charlotte, The Famous North Carolina Stingray Has Died
You may remember her as the stingray at a Hendersonville, North Carolina aquarium that miraculously became pregnant without a male in the tank. She lived at the Aquarium and Shark Lab in the mountain town. Then it was reported that she may never have been pregnant at all. Here is what the aquarium had to say about her passing according to our source, The Charlotte Observer. “We are sad to announce, after continuing treatment with her medical team and specialist, our ray Charlotte passed away”. “We are continuing to work with her medical team”. This published at charlotteobserver.com.
She Was Probably The Most Well Known Stingray In The World
Charlotte went viral after scientists suspected she may have been pregnant without a male. People all over the world knew about her. The story was even spoofed on Saturday Night Live. The speculation at the time was the theory that one of the male sharks in the tank at the time could have impregnated her. Another theory was a case of asexual reproduction.
It was later revealed that while a pregnancy was initially the thought, it could have been a condition called Diapause. And that is reportedly a kind of “suspended state of pregnancy” in animals where the embryo does not implant in the mother’s uterus.
Charlotte, the famous North Carolina stingray has passed away. Naturally her care givers need good thoughts and energy sent their way as they navigate this loss. Somehow, it feels like a loss to all of us in North Carolina. Especially those of us that were rooting for Charlotte and her baby that was never to be.
