For those who live in locations with a lot of noise, this new fabric will be great news! According to GoodNet, a study was recently done with researchers at MIT that proved a new lightweight fabric can act as a sound barrier. ZME Science reports that the fabric was found to cancel out sound enough to create quiet almost anywhere, even in large rooms.

In a small setting the fabric works like noise canceling headphones by generating sound waves that offsets other noise. While testing the fabric researchers were able to decrease the volume of noises by as much as 65 decibels

This fabric also does well in larger spaces like rooms and airplanes. The fabric reflects the noise being created back into the space it's being made in. The way it does this is similar to how mirrors reflect light. When being used this way researchers were able to get sound transmission to drop by 75%.

This technology can be extremely helpful in smaller shared spaces like college dorms where you only have enough space to hang up something like a curtain. It makes it possible for one person to be awake and actively doing things while the other sleeps or does tasks that require focus. The fabric can also be hung up on walls to mute out the sound of noisy neighbors or the street if you live on a busy road.
