The Carolina Wolf Spider can be found just about anywhere in the Tar Heel State. And lucky us, she says dripping with sarcasm, they are the largest species of wolf spider in the United States and Canada. And they are active right now and in to the fall.
This Is What They Look Like
You cannot miss the wolf spider. I know I didn’t. Mine was about three inches long and moving rapidly. I’m an outdoor girl but even I shuddered when I saw it. Poor thing. Its not his fault he is big and scary looking. When you see one there is no mistaking it. They are generally around 3 inches long, brownish, long legs, their bodies covered in fur with eight eyes in two rows on their heads. Not exactly Brad Pitt.
The big experts at Orkin say via our source the Charlotte Observer, you can really expect to see them just about anywhere. They may live in dry wooded areas or wet coastal forests. They also may choose to live in your garden and can gain access to your house through basements, garages or open windows. And get this, they don’t spin webs. Instead they burrow in the ground and make their home there.
What To Do If One Bites You
Wolf spiders are not venomous but their bite may be painful. WebMD says “If you have mild pain at the bite site, the swelling and itchiness should subside”. An allergic reaction is possible. The experts suggest you should seek medical attention immediately if you have a headache or are dizzy after being bitten. Also, if you have trouble breathing, have a fever or a rash seek immediate attention.
Wolf Spiders Could Be Dangerous For Small Animals
While the bite of wolf spiders isn’t usually dangerous to humans it could be to small pets. The Charlotte Observer reports the bite could even be fatal. If your pet is bitten by a wolf spider, it’s suggested to take them to the vet immediately.
