Conway South Carolina’s 1st Self Serve Taproom Now Open
Breweries and craft cocktail spots are very popular right now. And, Conway 1st self serve taproom opened this week in the South Carolina college town. ‘Palmetto Taps’ promises to deliver on the variety.
So, what’s a ‘self serve’ taproom?
Well, these are really fun. We love visiting one in downtown Monroe, North Carolina called ‘The Courthouse.’ It’s named for its location across from the historic Old Union Country Courthouse. And, ‘Open Tap,’ also a self serve concept, opened recently on Carmel Rd. in South Charlotte, where we visited and had amazing brew and food!

How Self Serve Taprooms Work
The idea of the self serve taproom is to have dozens of selections of beers, hard ciders and seltzers on tap in the wall. Typically, customers put a form or payment on file and get a card or a wrist band they can tap at which ever dispenser they wish on the wall. They fill their glass with as much or as little as they want. And, the charge adds up by the ounce. The bill is settled at the end of the visit.
It’s so much fun. And, it gives you a chance to try a taste before deciding which ones you might want to get larger servings of. Some of these spots like Open Tap in Charlotte bring in food trucks on a rotating basis. So, it’s nice to enjoy a beverage and some delicious food.

Owner Brian Von says prices at this Conway 1st self serve taproom range from 40 to 60 cents an ounce. And, this marks the first of its kind in Horry County near Myrtle Beach. But, Conway is home to Coastal Carolina University. And, the owner says he decided to move to the charming little town from California to be closer to his son, who is a Coastal alum.
He is looking to have a grand opening in August and eventually offer food and entertainment at the Conway 1st self serve taproom.
Conway is an adorable little town with eateries and cute shops to stroll along the quaint streets. It’s a nice retreat from the busy tourist atmosphere of nearby Myrtle. We were just there visiting my son who is a Coastal student. We really love the area and can’t wait to visit Palmetto Taps.
