Fortune Cookie Inspires North Carolina Man’s Lottery Win

I’m not a superstitious guy. That being said, I never miss an opportunity to check my horoscope and woe be upon you if you’re my server at an Asian restaurant and my check comes without a fortune cookie.

Why I Believe In The Power Of The Fortune Cookie

True Story. Back in 1997, my wife/radio partner and I entered into a prestigious national contest for disc jockeys. We finished in the top 3, but didn’t win. The next year, we felt pretty confident we had a good shot, so we entered the contest again. A couple of months went by with no word. Anyway, we went out for Chinese food and my wife’s fortune cookie message said, “You will be awarded a great honor.” The next day, we found out we won. So, ever since…if the fortune cookie says it, we pay attention.

Why A Randolph County Man Believes In Fortune Cookie Power

John Carter, of Randolph County, North Carolina probably now shares our view of the magic messages in those oddly shaped cookies. See, he was having some Chinese food the other night and at the end of the meal, the fortune inside his cookie read, “Don’t miss out on your chance to win big.” So, what did John Carter do? If you guessed go out and immediately buy a scratch-off lottery ticket, you would be correct.

What Did Obeying A Fortune Cookie Yield This Man?

The ticket was the “Pot of Gold” from The North Carolina Education Lottery. Carter tells WCVB, “I was thinking the fortune cookie was a sign. It had to be fate. I started seeing zero, zero, zero. I thought, ‘This has got to be a dream.’” Indeed, the best kind of dream come true. After taxes John Carter took home just north of $143,000. He plans to pay some bills and buy a fishing boat.
