Driving Laws In California Changing
Driving laws in California are changing. California will soon make physical driver’s licenses optional.
California Law Is Changing
Soon, Californians will no longer be required to carry a physical copy of their driver’s licenses when they’re in their vehicles. The California Department of Motor Vehicles is kicking off its mDL pilot program, which allows residents to carry virtual copies of their IDs and driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The virtual copies can be used at TSA checkpoints, businesses that require ID, and other places, according to the MVD.
So You Will Still Need To Have A Physical License?
According to KRON4, the Governor says despite its utility, Newsom’s office emphasized that the California DMV Wallet App “does not replace the requirement for individuals to carry a physical card,” claiming that the digital IDs are supposed to serve for better convenience and not a replacement for an ID as a whole.
California Isn’t Alone
That’s not to say California is the first state to embrace the technology. Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, and Ohio already accept virtual copies of ID. I guess this makes sense considering almost everything we own now is somehow linked to our phones. Somehow I can’t help but think that this would make forgeries easier though. Time will tell.
