Florida Dedicates Road To Jimmy Buffett
The passing of Jimmy Buffet was a sad day for music fans. Florida has dedicated a road to Jimmy Buffett.
Where Is It
While one might expect a road named “The Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway” to lead to somewhere like Margaritaville, a highway bearing that name instead takes motorists along the entire length of Florida’s coast.
The Ceremony
In a ceremony held Friday in Key West, the former A1A Highway was renamed in honor of the legendary singer-guitarist, who had homes in Key West and Palm Beach. “When Jimmy was 25, his life forever changed as he drove down the A1A for the first time and found a home in Key West,” says Lucy Buffett, Jimmy’s sister. “He would be humbled, yet sheepishly thrilled, in his ‘school-boy heart’ way, that the Florida Legislature unanimously honored his legacy designating A1A the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.”
Jimmy Is Getting Lots Of Honors
According to the Palm Beach Post, many ways have been approved by the Florida legislature to honor Jimmy Buffett. August 30th was declared Jimmy Buffett Day. Also, State Road A1A was renamed the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway. Finally, a new license plate was created with Florida at the top and Margaritaville at the bottom, and fees from the sale of the plate will be distributed to the SFC Charitable Foundation Inc., also known as Singing for Change, which was founded by Buffett in 1995.
