This hurricane season just keeps slamming folks in already hard hit areas. And, although we all are familiar with the Waffle House Index, do you know about the Waffle House storm center? Apparently, it's a real thing. And, I was intrigued to read all about how they actually assist FEMA.

So, in case you aren't familiar with the infamous Waffle House index, we'll give a brief summary. The chain operates on a color coded system with levels of varying degrees depending on severity of storms in the area.

Green means they're serving a full menu, the damage is not bad and the lights are on. Yellow indicates a limited menu. Typically the power is running from a generator, perhaps. And their supplies may be limited. Red, of course, signals the location is closed due to severe storm damage or unsafe conditions.

But, according to WCNC, they don't stop at the index. There's also a legitimate Waffle House Storm Center. Officials for the chain say this isn't a new thing. They have responded to storms for decades. And, they ramped up efforts following Katrina in 2005.

And, they do operate a storm center in a conference room at headquarters in Georgia. Earlier this week, social media posts talked of such a storm center ahead of Milton. And, it seems that it's good enough to help FEMA in their efforts during a crisis.

The chain did close a decent number of Waffle House locations in Florida before Milton hit to keep associates safe. So, I suppose when Mr. Rogers said to look for the helpers that could include Waffle House!
