Say what? I had to look this one up myself. A tipsy North Carolina cowboy assures onlookers that it's OK to ride a horse while intoxicated. Now, I ride horses. And I can assure you it is not a good idea to ride and drink. But this dude did indeed know his civic rights.
Tipsy North Carolina Cowboy Says It's Legal To Ride And Drink
According to our source, whiskeyriff.com, the unidentified North Carolina man on horseback was happy to display his knowledge to everyone about the DUI laws. Whiskey Riff reports," It appears that as he rode through town on a horse while drinking an ice cold beer. His beverage of choice appears to be a Miller High Life, and why not? He’s certainly living the high life… sipping on the champagne of beers atop his trusty steed."
Turns Out, The Ol' Cowboy Was Correct
Naturally people who witnessed this were concerned. Who knows if their concern was warranted but the guy is right. It IS legal to ride a horse while drinking alcohol. The state of North Carolina does not consider a horse as a vehicle. “Notwithstanding the definition of ‘vehicle’ pursuant to G.S. 20-4.01(49), for purposes of this section the word ‘vehicle’ does not include a horse.” (From Whiskey Riff) This tipsy North Carolina cowboy assures onlookers it's OK to ride a horse while intoxicated. And while it is hard to believe, the man was not lying.
As an equestrian, I can tell you that I personally would not be able to ride a horse on a street while drinking alcohol. Takes balance to ride properly and it takes keeping your wits about you if something goes wrong. I hate to poop on the parade of this North Carolina cowboy, but just because it's legal doesn't mean it's smart. In my humble opinion.
