It's a sight no horse owner wants to see. You look in the pasture and see your beloved horse rolling and thrashing. And unfortunately, it is happening a lot right now in North Carolina and South Carolina. Catherine's horse had colic this past weekend. And here are the symptoms.

Right now I have my horse Journey at her trainer Olivia's house. And I got the dreaded call from Olivia at 8 am on Saturday morning. I knew as soon as I saw her name on my phone that something must be wrong with Journey. All symptoms pointed to horse colic and I rushed right over. It was time to act fast.

My horse is almost always bright and sassy and she had never had colic before. But early Saturday morning she was thrashing and rolling and it was obvious she was uncomfortable. This is one of the first signs of colic. Other symptoms are sweating, unable to pass feces , elevated pulse rate or erratic breathing and just generally not acting the way they normally do. Horses are often referred to by vets as "eggs on legs". Despite their size and strength they really have a delicate gastrointestinal system. There are many types of colic. And sometimes the illness is brought on by weather fluctuations. It can be deadly. I believe Journey had impaction colic. We called a mobile vet right away who treated her. We proceeded to walk her around to get "things moving" and encouraged her to drink.
