We’ve all had the delicious rice crispy treats a million times.  They are a childhood…and adulthood favorite for sure. However, my elementary school reimagined them for our cafeteria plate. And, today they're the perfect lunchbox or after school snacks for your kiddos. Plus, I just learned we celebrated National Snack Day this week (March 4, 2025).

Origins Of These After School Snacks

When I was in school a 100 years ago, our cafeteria made a similar treat to the iconic Rice Krispy treats with corn flakes instead of rice cereal and added peanut butter to make these Peanut Butter Crispy Treats. I know these days peanut butter is off limits in many schools due to allergies. Although, back in my day, we never heard of peanut allergies fortunately.

Who knows why they changed the standard recipe for the treats. Possibly it had to do with budgetary issues and the flakes were cheaper? Plus, the added peanut butter could have possibly satisfied some government requirement in the nutritional pyramid. But, it makes these after school snacks delicious.

No matter the how or why, these treats are really tasty, and I always looked forward to their appearance on the divided tray! With kids in school for a little while longer before spring and summer breaks…I thought this would be a nice treat to throw in the lunch box…or to have as after school snacks. Plus, once it is summer time, this one will have all the kids in the neighborhood flocking to your house for treats.

And, they're sooooo easy and affordable. There's no age requirement to enjoy these treats. The ooey, gooey goodness is a delight everyone in your household will enjoy. So grab the supplies and start melting and stirring up the pot for Peanut Butter Crispy Treats for your kids' lunchbox treats or after school snacks! And, cheers to National Snack Day!
