North Charlotte faces a public health alert after two bats tested positive for rabies near Arbor Creek Drive. The infected bats made contact with two locals and their pets. Officials quickly sent warnings across the 28206 and 28269 areas.
The count of rabies cases in Mecklenburg County now stands at five this year. Before the bats, three infected raccoons turned up in different parts of town: ZIP codes 28105, 28211, and 28227.
Animal Care & Control tracks these cases with care. Last year saw 14 sick animals, with one raccoon found right in the 28269 area. The numbers paint a clear picture of the virus's presence.
Swift action followed the discovery. Health teams rushed to spread word on Alexander Street and nearby blocks, making sure folks knew about the risk.
This year's five cases mark an uptick from 2024. Each new find adds to mounting proof that wild creatures still carry this deadly virus through our streets and woods.
Got worries about rabies? The county set up a special phone line at (980) 598-9424. Trained staff stand ready to help if you think you've touched a sick animal.
The threat isn't just here. Next door in Lincoln County, they've spotted their sixth case already. Wild animals don't know county lines when they roam.
The virus spreads when sick animals bite or scratch. It attacks the nerves and kills without fast treatment. Keep your pets' shots current: it might save their life. And please, don't go near wild animals, no matter how harmless they seem.
