Work has started on the $70 million upgrade of Jerry Richardson Stadium at UNC Charlotte. The build will add seats and new spaces, with plans to finish in spring 2027.
"This project is a statement about who we are and where we are headed. It reflects the momentum we are building in academics, research, and athletics," Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber said, according to School Construction News. "And it signals a new era for Charlotte football. Charlotte is ready to compete — and to win — on every stage."
A fresh tower will rise above the current press box. Inside, athletes will train in state-of-the-art spaces. Fans will watch games from new spots: seven suites, boxes, and special seats. They'll also get an indoor club and open-air terrace to enjoy.
With extra seats on the east side, the stadium will fit 17,700 people. Money from tickets should hit $2 million each year: double the current amount.
Three firms split the work. RMF Engineering handles systems, Barton Malow builds, while McMillan Pazdan Smith and SLAM create the designs.
These spaces will serve many needs. Premium areas welcome fans on game days. Teams meet and eat there during the week. Athletes get food year-round, plus the school will host more local events.
"What an incredible day for Charlotte Athletics, for our university, and for our community," Athletics Director Mike Hill said. "The response to our expansion plan has been nothing short of tremendous. Now, this plan begins to take shape. Over the next two seasons, with as little interruption to the game-day experience as possible, our team will be hard at work delivering something truly special."
The timing fits well with rising interest in football. Last season saw every season ticket snapped up: a first for the school. New coach Tim Albin's arrival brought record ticket renewals too.
While building goes on, the same number of fans can still come to games. But some changes to game day will pop up: details still to come from officials.
