The deal closed about a month after Thompson inked a one-year free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. The 31-year-old linebacker spent 10 seasons with the Carolina Panthers. The team released him in February.
The 11,000-square-foot estate sprawls across 1.7 acres on Carmel Park Drive off Fairview Road. Thompson commissioned construction in 2020. He'd purchased the lot in 2019 for $1.25 million.
Ben Bowen of Premier Sotheby's International Realty managed the sale from the firm's Lake Norman office in Cornelius. The buyer's identity remains undisclosed. Mecklenburg County property tax records still show Thompson as owner.
"Shaq crafted a home that elevated the standard for luxury, design, and lifestyle in Carmel Park, and buyers felt that from the moment they walked in," said Bowen in a statement, according to the Charlotte Observer.
The closing price came in $1.7 million below the original ask when Thompson put the property up for sale in July. He listed the estate weeks after signing with the Bills.
In addition to six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, the home showcases a two-story great room with dual chandeliers. A main-level primary suite anchors the space, joined by two offices, a home theater, and an entertainment lounge with billiards area and full bar.
The property contains a wellness center with a gym, sauna, and steam shower. A gourmet kitchen, wine wall, and both formal and informal living areas complete the main house.
Outside amenities pack a punch: a resort-style pool with spa, covered cabana, grilling patio with fireplace, and a full-size sports court. The fenced property also boasts a four-car garage.
Charlotte-based Arcadia Homes constructed the light-stucco residence, with Christopher Phelps Design Group serving as architect. The estate goes by the name Three Little Birds and occupies the 5500 block of Carmel Park Drive.
