The North Carolina Department of Transportation will start a $6 million resurfacing project on N.C. 49 as early as Jan. 26. Blythe Brothers Asphalt Co., LLC won the contract to improve 7.8 miles of South Tryon Street between Interstate 485 and the Buster Boyd bridge near the South Carolina border.

Four sections in both directions will get fresh pavement. Crews have until summer 2027 to complete the project.

Lane closures won't happen during daylight hours under the contract terms. The agreement also prohibits closures during high-traffic events and major holidays at several venues in the city limits. Most work will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Workers will mill and resurface the roadway to handle heavy traffic. NCDOT said the improvements will boost safety for all road users on one of the county's busiest roads.

Drivers can get real-time travel updates at DriveNC.gov during construction. NCDOT also shares information on social media platforms.

The resurfacing matches up with the region's long-term infrastructure goals. The local contractor will handle all aspects of the work on the stretch that serves as a key artery for Mecklenburg County.

Construction teams will focus on the less disruptive overnight hours to reduce impact on commuters. The 18-month timeline gives crews room to finish the extensive work while keeping daytime traffic moving.

Residents and commuters who use the route can expect better driving conditions once workers wrap up. The upgrades cover both northbound and southbound lanes across the entire 7.8-mile section.
