Mecklenburg County will shut down offices on Monday, Jan. 19, observing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Dozens of departments won't operate that day.

Child, Family, and Adult Services under DSS will suspend operations. Both the Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center and Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center will lock their doors to visitors.

Public Health won't see patients. The Elections Office, Tax Collector, County Assessor's Office, Register of Deeds Office, and Land Use and Environmental Services Agency Offices will also remain shuttered. Solid Waste Centers across Mecklenburg won't accept drop-offs.

Charlotte and smaller towns within Mecklenburg might still run residential trash pickup. Check your collector's website.

Parks stay open. But recreation centers, senior centers, indoor pools, and nature centers won't. Seasonal pools, spraygrounds, and beaches are already closed until warmer months return.

DSS hotlines operate around the clock, accepting reports about suspected abuse or neglect. Seniors or disabled adults who need protection can be reported at 704-336-CARE (2273). If you suspect a child faces abuse, neglect, or human trafficking, dial 980-31-HELPS (43577).

CharMeck 311 will adjust hours. After standard business hours, an automated system handles water problems, sewer backups, stormwater concerns, and animal control issues, dispatching help when needed.

Service requests can be filed online anytime. Download the CLT+ mobile app for quick access to municipal services. For true emergencies during the holiday, dial 911.

This annual closure honors Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader whose birthday became a federal holiday. All county operations restart Tuesday, Jan. 20.
