Be An Ocean
Do you ever look at someone and think, “You’re a lot.”? Or maybe someone has told you that you’re a lot. I get it. Some people do require more attention and maintenance than others. We all have a friend or family member who seems to soak up issues like a sponge. Those folks aren’t necessarily the ones we’re talking about in this ‘ocean’ context. We’re not referring to the people who make everything about them even when it isn’t. Those are the ones who try to take you down with them, drowning in the deep end.
On the contrary, in the ‘ocean’ metaphor, we place the people who are always seeking to better themselves. They push for more not to place themselves in a spotlight for attention or sympathy. They do so because they are achievers and goal setters. And that should be applauded.
Way too often in the workplace, school, families or life in general, the achievers are told, either directly or indirectly, to pipe down and not be so obviously successful. It seems employers, especially, sometimes fear the hard-working, goal-oriented people will somehow make those who don’t have that same drive feel bad about their own shortcomings. In reality, workers who set goals, achieve, and make the company better should be held up as the example to strive for. Since when did doing your job well become a liability rather than an asset?
Sadly though, these days that is reality. To avoid stepping on the toes of those who are content to bring the bare minimum to the table, hard workers are ignored, not applauded for their efforts or given more work to pick up the slack for the rest. I’m not saying this happens in every situation. But we’ve probably all seen it at one point or another. And, the ones carrying the weight start to wonder why they should continue to care so much. Unfortunately it often leads to discontent and resignations.
All of this to say, don’t ever let anyone cause you to doubt yourself and your achievements. Keep on striving for more because it’s who you are. Do it for YOU, because you take pride in your work. In other words, “If you’re an ocean, be an ocean. Don’t be a pond just because others can’t swim.” And that’s Something To Hang Your Hat On.
