It has been revealed that Catherine O'Hara passed away from a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer as a contributing factor, according to her death certificate from the L.A. County Medical Examiner's Office. The story was first reported by TMZ, citing sources with direct knowledge. The office confirmed that a blood clot obstructed an artery in her lung, linked to rectal cancer, which led to her passing.
The document, issued on Monday, notes that her remains were cremated and returned to her husband, Robert "Bo" Welch. O'Hara passed on January 30 after being taken to the hospital with breathing problems.
Born in 1954, O'Hara was 71 when she died. She passed at her home in Los Angeles.
O'Hara's big-screen career began in 1988 with the role of Delia Deetz in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. She became famous as Kevin McCallister's mom in the Home Alone films and starred in Best In Show. Returning to TV, she played Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek from 2015 to 2020, winning four Canadian Screen Awards and an Emmy.
Her career brought her numerous accolades, including two Emmys, two SAGs, and a Golden Globe. In 2023, she was nominated for an Emmy for The Studio on Apple TV+.
O'Hara was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2007. Beyond acting, she championed causes like Upward Bound House in Los Angeles, winning $250,000 for the charity on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2020.
