Wing, which Google's parent company Alphabet owns, launched new stations at Sun Valley Commons in Indian Trail and at the Lowe's off Matthews Township Parkway. Workers grab orders from nearby restaurants, clip packages onto drones, then send them flying up to four miles away. The aircraft lower food by tether.
Four locations now operate across Charlotte. DoorDash also flies deliveries from Northcross Shopping Center in Huntersville and The Arboretum Shopping Center in South Charlotte, which opened in May 2025 as the first spot.
Public permit filings show plans for University City too.
At the stations, called "nests," workers clip lightweight packages to aircraft that descend orders by tether at each address. Residents who live close enough see a drone icon when they open the app.
"Anytime we have friends or family over we'll order smoothies from Smoothie King and they typically arrive in our driveway in 8-10 minutes," Axios reader Brooks Quinn said. "On days when I work from home, I order a salad from Chopt and it arrives at my house in under 10 minutes."
Wing reports that Manhattan Bagel, Chopt, Panera, and Firehouse Subs rank as the most popular restaurants for drone delivery.
The expansion comes as Charlotte gets ready for more automation, with Waymo's driverless cars spotted in the city, signaling increased adoption of new technology that's reshaping how residents receive goods and get around town.
Advocate Health, which includes Atrium Health, announced plans to start delivering prescriptions, labs, and medical supplies via Zipline drone in Charlotte in 2027, creating what will become the nation's largest hospital drone delivery network.
