King Asphalt Inc. landed a $3.7 million deal from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The South Carolina contractor will resurface more than nine miles of pavement across Mecklenburg County.

According to WSOC-TV, the work spans U.S. 521 and over a dozen smaller roads. The project tackles a key section of U.S. 521 running from the South Carolina border up to Brixham Hill Road. Crews will mill down old pavement, patch trouble spots, and lay fresh asphalt in both directions before adding new markings.

A long list of secondary roads in the county's southern section will get the same treatment. Blue Granite Road, Woodside Falls Road, Limestone Lane, Sapphire Lane, Emerald Court, Diamond Drive, Peridot Court, Cotton Lane, Sawtry Court, Gatestone Lane, Dansville Drive, Wildiris Court, Seastone Lane, and Baker Mills Road are all slated for repaving.

Construction could begin this month. NCDOT expects completion by fall 2027.

Workers can close lanes on U.S. 521 only during nighttime hours — between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Holidays and major events will bring additional restrictions.

Drivers should check DriveNC.gov or NCDOT's social media accounts for current traffic conditions and detour information as work progresses through the coming months.
