Charlotte Airport Hits Record with 58.8 Million Travelers in 2024
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) experienced a 10% increase in passenger traffic in 2024, with 58.8 million travelers passing through its terminals. A 13% rise in international travel contributed to the surge, making CLT one of the busiest airports in the world. “CLT remains one of the busiest and most efficient airports in the world,” said CLT CEO Haley Gentry to WCCB Charlotte.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) also set a new record, serving 15.5 million passengers, the highest number to date. Meanwhile, Asheville Regional Airport faced a 3% dip due to Hurricane Helene but still recorded its second-highest passenger count ever, with 2,174,125 travelers.
Frequent flyer Dalton Sigmon, who passes through CLT twice a week, noted the heavy traffic and potentially longer wait times, though he acknowledged the benefits of TSA PreCheck. To meet growing demand, CLT is expanding its facilities, including a new TSA Checkpoint 2 and a terminal lobby expansion, set for completion this year. Construction on a new runway is in its early stages to enhance airport capacity.
As passenger numbers rise, Charlotte Douglas has also seen growth in dining options. The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery opened its second airport location in November 2024, anticipating a doubling of sales volume due to the airport’s increasing foot traffic.
With record-breaking numbers at CLT and RDU, North Carolina’s airports continue to play a critical role in national and international travel, solidifying their status as key transportation hubs.
