February is Black History Month and Charlotte has plenty of opportunities for you to celebrate for people of all ages. From stories to lectures, to nature events we’ve got you covered on things to do.  Black History Month this year, Black Health and Wellness is the theme. Interested in celebrating African American achievements from the past to the present this February? Here are 15 ways to celebrate Black History Month in Charlotte.

 

  • Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Equity Impact Circle

    This 5-week series will take place each Wednesday in February. The online event is from 1-2:30 pm and features discussions around topics of equity and inclusion. The hope of the event is to: 

    • Broaden the community of individuals who are utilizing an equity lens in exploring community identity and issues;

    • Build relationships among community members through an exploration of equity;

    • Support individuals to build a more connected community where everyone wakes up to discrimination and injustice; interrupts inequitable systems and structures; and steps up to champion equal rights, access and opportunity.

  • Black History Month Sip & Paint (R&B Edition)

    Each Thursday and Friday this month you can participate in Sip & Paint at Black Owned Restaurant Bobbee O’s BBQ. The event is from 8-10pm at 9401 Statesville Road, Charlotte, in the Northlake area. The cost to participate is $15.

  • Colorful Perspectives: STEAM Career Showcase

    Another event being put on by the Library is the Colorful Perspectives: STEAM Career Showcase. The event will take place Saturday, February 26th from 10 am-11 am. It will be a virtual event featuring a diverse panel of professionals within Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) related fields. Event will include a facilitated discussion around their individual career paths, highlights of their current (and previous roles), and their lessons learned while navigating professionally as a person of color.

  • I Can Read Black Stories

    This event, geared towards children aged 0-5 will take place on Facebook and Youtube. Enjoy stories, songs, and movement activities that support empathy and understanding of issues affecting Black children and families. This storytime features books that center around characters who are Black or people of color, offers strategies to foster conversations about equity and inclusivity, and encourages early literacy skill development and a love of books and reading in your child.

  • Loy H. Witherspoon Lecture Series: “SPIRITUAL MADNESS: AMERICAN PSYCHIATRY, RACE AND BLACK RELIGIONS” Featuring Judith Weisenfeld

    Part of the UNC Charlotte Black History month events this event takes place February 3, 2022 from 7:00 PM-9:00 PM.

    Judith Weisenfeld, the Agate Brown and George L. Collord Professor of Religion at Princeton University will deliver her lecture, “Spiritual Madness: American Psychiatry, Race and Black Religions,” for this year’s Loy. H. Witherspoon Lecture series. The event is presented by the Department of Religious Studies on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. It will be virtual and free to the public.

  • Black History Nature Series-Black in National Parks

    Only 2% of visitors to National Parks in this country are black. This free event happening Saturday, February 5th will dive into the unique history of African Americans and the National Park System. Get more info here

  • Town of Huntersville Black History Month Celebrations

    Join the Town of Huntersville each Monday at 2 pm for Black History Month programs. Events will take place at the David B. Waymer Recreation Center located at 14008 Holbrooks Rd.  The programs are FREE to the public. We are asking interested attendees to pre-register by phone at 980-314-1127. All ages are welcome to join. Masks will be required indoors. 

    • February 7, 2022 – History Presentation by: Community Leaders: Bee Jay Caldwell and Varona Wynn
    • February 14, 2022 – Showing of Hidden Figures Movie w/popcorn & candy selection

  • Black History Month At Harvey B. Gantt Center

    Kick off Black History Month with a 4-part virtual discussion series on the history of southern Black art and culture. Yvonne Bynoe, author, lecturer and founder of on-line platform, @SheLovesBlackArt, will facilitate weekly interviews and panel discussions with artists and art enthusiasts. Programs for each week will hone in on diverse aspects of the impact of Black art on our culture, with a focus on the Black southern region of the U.S.

    This week’s topic: In Conversation with Jamel Shabazz. Jamel Shabazz is the featured artist in the new exhibition Reflections of a People: Photographs from the Archive of Jamel Shabazz.

  • 2022 NC Black Heritage Festival

    The 2022 Queen City Black Heritage Festival themed “Past, Present, & Future” will feature 40 black owned companies.
