Whataburger Coming to Gastonia in Spring 2025, Bringing 150 New Jobs
The beloved Texas burger chain Whataburger is opening its first North Carolina spot at 3415 E. Franklin Blvd. in Gastonia. Set to open in May, the restaurant will create 150 local jobs.
Taking over the old Backyard Burgers building, this 24-hour restaurant is a big deal for the chain. North Carolina residents haven’t been able to get their hands on Whataburger’s popular menu until now.
“The new Whataburger signifies the city’s growth as a business destination,” said Kristy Crisp, Gastonia’s Director of Economic Development, to Gastongazette.com.
Gastonia is just the beginning. The chain plans to open locations in Charlotte, Hickory, and five other North Carolina cities. Each restaurant will feature double drive-thru lanes, pickup areas, and mobile ordering.
The news hits home for many locals. Star Connor says she drives to Georgia whenever she craves Whataburger. Carrie Robbins shares that her parents had their first date at a Whataburger back in the ’60s, making it extra special for her family.
At the announcement, Mayor Richard Franks sat down with company representatives to talk about what the restaurant will bring to Gastonia. Everyone seemed excited about the new business coming to town.
Workers will give the old building a complete makeover. The updates will add efficient drive-thrus and special parking spots for people picking up mobile orders.
The location on East Franklin Boulevard is perfect, right in the middle of a busy shopping area. This part of Gastonia keeps growing with new businesses, making it an ideal spot for Whataburger’s first NC restaurant.
