Charlotte Named First U.S. Host of Military World Games for 2027
Charlotte has officially been selected to host the 2027 Military World Games, marking the first time the international event will take place in the United States. The Pentagon’s recent approval, solidified by a key letter of support from the Department of Defense last week, was instrumental in securing the bid.
The Military World Games, the second-largest international sporting event after the Summer Olympics, are expected to attract competitors from 100 to 125 countries competing in about 25 sports. The games are organized under the aegis of the International Military Sports Federation, and the motto of that group, “Friendship through sports,” reflects the event’s aim of bringing together the world through athletic competition.
Eli Bremer, one co-chair of the games, emphasized the event’s power to build international cooperation and mutual respect among the military athletes. The opening ceremonies will be hosted at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as competitions at several different venues, including UNC Charlotte. The games will be accompanied by concert series and other cultural festivities across the city to create an even further connection to the local area.
Local veterans see the games as more than a competition — they see it as a chance to connect. “You build a bond with the people that you probably would not think,” said Anne-Marie Pumphrey, U.S. Army veteran. “It’s a good sense of camaraderie-ship.”
Organizers also highlight the potential for a significant economic impact on the Charlotte region and the opportunity to showcase local role models and elevate the city’s international profile. Now that the selection is formal, the next focus is a critical planning meeting with the International Military Sports Council set for next weekend.
The centerpiece event, the 2027 Military World Games, is projected to bring the world to Charlotte, creating connections through sport, service, and shared values.
