North Carolina Man Uses Famous Phone Number To Rack Up Thousands In Store Rewards
Some stores offer rewards for shopping there. A famous phone number has caused a controversy. A North Carolina man used a famous phone number to rack up thousands in rewards.
WCNC says a Charlotte, North Carolina man recently racked up thousands of dollars in Food Lion rewards using his phone number. Chris Och has the famous phone number 867-5309 made popular by the song “867-5309/Jenny” by Tommy Tutone.
Chris got the number many years ago. He wanted to have a famous phone number. I’m sure it was also a great conversation piece.
Och suspects that others without accounts use his number to claim rewards at the checkout.
Chris said with the Food Lion rewards app you have the choice to donate your savings to a good cause. He did try to do that. He got a surprise though. Food Lion deactivated his number due to concerns about potential misuse. Chris had saved $92,965 with his famous phone number. To do that he would have had to spend millions.
Food Lion sent WCNC Charlotte a statement about what happened:
At Food Lion, we take customer concerns seriously. While we regret this situation is happening to our customer, Food Lion also has a responsibility to prevent misuse of the MVP customer loyalty program. Due to the high volume of transactions associated with the phone number, our systems were alerted to potential misuse. At that time, the customer’s phone number was deactivated in our system. Unfortunately, the phone number was re-activated. However, Food Lion has since taken steps to deactivate this phone number.
