Here’s Why A Polar Bear Lost His Life At The North Carolina Zoo
Payton the Polar Bear is a beloved family member at the North Carolina Zoo. Sadly, he lost his life recently and here’s why.
Polar Bear Payton was actually in the process of a breeding transfer to a zoo in Kentucky when he went into cardiac arrest. A large animal vet confirmed his death. The polar bear had been a beloved resident of the North Carolina zoo for two years. He moved there in January 2021. The zoo says they will be investigating his death.
Payton was 19 years old at the time of his passing. He moved to Asheboro from Memphis. He was born in Brookfield, Illinois. For more information check out details from abc45 right here.
Polar bears actually live longer in captivity. In the wild they live to be around 15-18 years. When polar bears are in a fully accredited facility they can live to around 23.

The Smithsonian National Zoo sits on 163 acres in the heart of Washington, D.C.’s Rock Creek Park. Founded in 1889, the Zoo is currently home to more than 2,700 animals representing more than 390 species. Like all Smithsonian museums, admission is free. A popular feature of the zoo is its endangered giant pandas which include adults Tian Tian and Mei Xiang and one-year-old Xiao Qi Ji.
