Positive Attitudes Toward Growing Old Could Lead To Better Health
Sad about ageing? Don’t be!
Instead of having negative thoughts about growing old, an upcoming report says that positive outlooks toward getting older will have health benefits.
Psychologist Becca Levy’s work will be included in the World Health Organization’s report.
For her entire career, Levy has linked negative attitudes about age to Alzheimer’s Disease, lack of mobility, and shortening of life span in people.
One of Levy’s studies is from the 1990s and it says replacing words like “decline, senile and decrepit” with words such as “wise, accomplished and enlightened” can help with the elderly’s health and the “will to live.”
