North Carolina Is Tenth For Fatal Crashes Involving Unlicensed Drivers
Does it seem like a lot of drivers don’t know what they’re doing? They might not. North Carolina is tenth in the nation for fatal crashes involving unlicensed drivers.
In a new study based on information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Tarheel State ranks near the top of the pack for the rate of unlicensed drivers involved in fatal crashes. The study included data from 2017-2021 and did not include CDL-licensed drivers.
In North Carolina, nearly 19 percent of all fatal crashes involved an unlicensed driver. These incidents include not having a license at all, license suspension, expiration or revocation. Some cases involved individuals who had been denied a license to drive altogether.
Texas leads the nation in fatal accidents involving unlicensed drivers. Twenty-four percent of fatal accidents in the Lone Star State involve someone driving without a license. Hawaii was second. California, Louisiana and Indiana round out the top five.
