Mega Millions Jackpot Is Currently The 6th Largest Prize Ever
According to WCNC Charlotte, the Mega Millions jackpot for Tuesday night is making its way up the record books.
The Mega Millions jackpot prize is currently estimated to be $1.1 billion and it will be up for grabs Tuesday night. This will give lottery players a chance to snap out of an unlucky steak that has lasted for months.
Tuesday’s jackpot was originally announced to have a $1.05 billion prize. However, the lottery raised to $1.1 billion just hours before the drawing.
The Mega Millions jackpot hasn’t been won since April 18. This has allowed it to roll over multiple times until it reached its current status of being tied as the sixth-largest in U.S. history. Tuesday night’s drawing will be the 30th time since someone has actually won the jackpot.
The reason for it being such a long time since someone has one comes down to bad luck and terrible odds. The chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in 302.6 million. The odds of winning smaller prizes, however, are much better.
The $1.1 billion jackpot is for an individual winner who can choose to collect their prize annually with annual payments for over 30 years, or someone who chooses a lump sum and would receive around $550.2 million.
The winners would also have to pay federal taxes and many states also collect tax lottery winnings.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
