Legendary Coach Bill Belichick Begins UNC Tenure with North Carolina High School Recruitment Tour
Following Mack Brown’s 6-6 final season, Bill Belichick has taken the reins of UNC’s football program. His move to the team represents a major shake-up in college football.
On January 7, 2025, the legendary coach visited North Carolina high schools wearing Tar Heel blue. He made stops at Weddington, Providence Day, and Myers Park during his quick tour. Bringing 333 NFL wins and six Super Bowl championships, Belichick arrives in Chapel Hill with an incredible track record.
“(He) painted a picture of what the program will look like and how our kids will fit in that program,” said a coach for the College Football Network.
In just 36 hours, he raced through meetings with top prospects. He paid special attention to unsigned players Zavion Griffin-Haynes, Samari Matthews, and T.J. Davis, all key targets for UNC’s future. At his stops, he shared stories about NFL stars Mike Vrabel and Dont’a Hightower while drawing up defensive plays. His trip started in Raleigh and ended in Charlotte, perfectly matching the NCAA’s open contact period.
UNC added to their pitch with revenue sharing and NIL deals to attract top recruits. The school hasn’t made such a big coaching splash since Roy Williams came over from Kansas in 2003.
Belichick’s first game comes on Sept. 6, 2025, when the Tar Heels face Charlotte. There’s huge excitement among fans for this new phase of Carolina football.
His NFL success includes eight Super Bowl rings; six as head coach, two as assistant. After going to the championship game 12 times, he’s ready to raise the bar in college football.
