First Listen: The Strong Message In Keith Urban’s “Female”
Keith Urban continues to show why he’s one of country music’s most-adored leading men. The latest example? His new song “Female,” which the superstar Aussie debuted on the 51st Annual CMA Awards.
The song celebrates women at a time when the news cycle is increasingly defined by stories of sexual assault against them, not to mention domestic violence, gender pay equality and other troubling matters. The star was immediately drawn to the song when he heard it. “From the second I heard it I loved it and started figuring out how fast we could get into the studio to record it,” Keith recently explained, according to Nashville’s The Tennessean. “It just spoke to me as a father and a husband and a son. The song really touched me for women of all ages and all walks of life. ‘Female’ is such a great title and the right song to write.”

“Female” was written by celebrated Nashville songsmiths Nicolle Galyon, Ross Copperman and Shane McAnally, and its composers and performer hope it leads to positive change. “I think it’s just time for a re-calibrating of the past,” Keith explained on another awards show red carpet this week (BMI Awards). “Things have been a certain way for a long, long time and I think you’re seeing a turning of the tide.”
