Intern’s Corner With Amanda: In The Studio
Does this intern have what it takes?
Hey, I’m Amanda! I’m currently and intern with the digital content team at Beasley Media Group for the summer. For the most part, I’m scheduling social media posts and writing articles, but I recently got the chance to shadow a few of the radio personalities and see what they do on a day to day basis.
I got to sit in the studio with Big Sexy and Mimi from The New 103.7. I had been downing coffee the entire way to the studio, but these two already seemed wide awake for 7:30 in the morning. Honestly, I have no idea how they do this every day.
I saw how the schedule for music and commercial breaks is pre-listed, but can be changed as time goes on if they decide to add a short on-air segment. I got to be part of a little morning competition with a caller, which Big called “Beat the Intern.” Though the caller I played against didn’t get to win the Luke Bryan tickets, I enjoyed seeing Big and Mimi banter a bit. I even learned that a lot of the callers you hear on the radio are usually people that call in while the radio personalities are off the air, and are pre-recorded and played back in between songs. I enjoyed getting to see Big edit the track and cut out any silence in record time between songs.
Near the end of my time with 103.7, Mimi talked about a few tweets she’d seen, prompting herself to ask the listeners “what’s the funniest thing you’ve overheard?” You can read her blog post with some of funniest overheard things here.
Even if I wanted to stay and hear more from the callers, and from Big and Mimi, I had to say goodbye and head back to my little corner to write about my short-lived radio experience. Needless to say, I learned plenty about what it takes to be a radio personality, but I’m not so sure I have what it takes. Major props to Big and Mimi!
