Listen: Maren Morris And Brandi Carlile Have a Lot in ‘Common’
Maren Morris has a song on her new Girl album called “Common” that features Grammy winner Brandy Carlile.
“I’ve been a fan of Brandi’s for a long time,” Morris said in our interview. “When I moved to Nashville six years ago I went to Grimmey’s Records and one of the albums I bought that day, randomly, was Brandi Carlile’s Bear Creek, that had just come out.”
She continued, “If God was a woman and that woman sang it would be Brandi Carlile’s voice I believe. So, having her a part of this record just the soul, the grit, I mean… no one sounds like her.”
Carlile also had a lot of respect for Morris. “The first thing she said to me when we met at that CMT Women’s thing was, ‘You know as a gay woman, a gay mom…Thank you for being an ally to the LGBT community and being that woman in country music that is speaking for us.'” says Maren. “And for her to say that to me and that was like in her first minute of meeting me, like she doesn’t mess around. she immediately gets to the point but she does it in this maternal way that only she can. I just felt like we were probably sisters in a past life.”
Morris’ Girl album will be available tomorrow (3/8). Morris and Carlile also have formed a new supergroup with singers/songwriter Amanda Shires called the Highwomen. There’s no word on when they may release any music.
