A Strange Artifact was Found in Union County
Oh, I love this kinda stuff! An object found in Union County in 1973 may finally have a date. A 7” long stone “tool” is said to be from 3,000 to 1,000 BC. David Cranford of the Office of State Archaeology said the landowner found an ancient tool: An adze used for smoothing and trimming wood. Cranford goes on to say… The tool “could have been used prehistorically to make wooden bowls, dugout canoes, or other wooden objects.”
The exact spot where the stone was found was not revealed. Much of the area along the state’s border with South Carolina was home to the Catawba Nation, a federally recognized indigenous people.
