4th of July Picnic Basket Swap
To put it simply, 2020 hasn’t been easy. It’s been a rocky and uncertain time for all of us and an upheaval of life as we knew it.
We still want to hold on to some sense of normalcy. We still want to do the things we are used to doing, like celebrating the upcoming 4th of July the way we’ve always done….with food, friends, family, and fireworks. However the virus changed so much. In many places, congregating is still a no-go so Independence Day 2020 can really feel…independent.
But it doesn’t have to! We Americans are pretty damn resilient. If there is a will, we come up with a creative way to make it happen. Here are some innovative ways to celebrate the 4th.
1. Get this…do a picnic basket swap!
Barbecue and picnics are synonymous with July 4th. What if we made up baskets filled with 4th inspired edibles and sparklers and deliver it to family and friends? You can still enjoy Aunt Mabel’s potato salad and Uncle Frank’s famous BBQ from afar! Set up a zoom meeting so everyone can enjoy the food and familiar faces together. Hot Dam! Right? Genius! My fabulous intern, Ebony Elizabeth came up with the idea.
2. Virtual Movie Night.
Browser extensions like Netflix Party, Scener, Metastream, and two-seven allow you to synch videos on various streaming platforms, and—depending on the app—add group text or video chat features, too. Crank up a 4th themed movie and enjoy together.
3. Fireworks!
Many fireworks displays are cancelled this year, but in some cities like Boston and Nashville the show must go on. Plan for everyone to tune into the televised event. Set up a Zoom so you can marvel at the beauty together.
And, maybe do a good deed for someone less fortunate than you!
